SKF Group embraced the unique opportunity to share in-depth knowledge about all things bearings with students from various engineering disciplines during an esteemed Student Career Open Day hosted by the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in May 2024.

The event, which was organised by the SaiMechE (South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering) student chapter, provided attending students with an invaluable platform to explore potential career paths, engage with industry leaders and learn about cutting-edge technologies that are shaping the future of engineering.

The open day attracted a diverse group of passionate and inquisitive students who enthusiastically engaged with the SKF team. “It was a day of discovery and innovation that inspired students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in their future careers,” attests Simphiwe Siwela, SKF Territory Sales Engineer – Gauteng / North-West. “In addition to providing in-depth knowledge about the critical role of bearings in modern engineering, information was also shared with the students on innovative connected technologies pioneered by SKF.”

Through a series of engaging presentations, SKF representatives discussed with the students the intricacies of bearings and their applications across different industries. “Information was also imparted on how advancements in connected technologies are transforming the way we approach maintenance and performance optimisation,” explains Siwela. He adds that students were particularly fascinated by the real-world applications of these technologies, from improving machinery efficiency to enabling predictive maintenance.

Several interactive sessions, specifically designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, gave students hands-on experience with SKF’s latest product and solution offerings and first-hand insight into technologies driving the industry forward.

Alongside technical knowledge, the open day provided a fitting platform for the students to network with professionals from SKF and other participating companies. During this invaluable interaction, SKF representatives offered personalised career guidance, helping students understand the various roles within both the company as well as the broader industry. This mentorship was instrumental in giving students insights into potential career paths, the skills required in the industry, and the opportunities available to them upon graduation, ultimately leaving the highly motived students with a clearer vision of their future careers.

Hailing the open day as a resounding success, Siwela says that events like these underline the importance of industry-academic collaboration. “The Student Career Open Day served as a reminder of the endless possibilities within the engineering space and the importance of staying curious and engaged with emerging technologies. We were extremely encouraged by the tremendous enthusiasm shown by the students and their eagerness to participate in the various activities, to listen to insightful presentations, and to interact with industry experts. The event undoubtedly left an indelible impact on all who attended, and the students walked away with a wealth of knowledge, new connections, and a renewed passion for their chosen field. SKF Group’s involvement in this remarkable event highlights the organisation’s relentless commitment to nurturing the next generation of engineers and fostering innovation within this field,” concludes Siwela.
