Wayne has launched the Phambili MetaPro, a new locally manufactured safety gumboot that brings metatarsal protection into the construction of the boot itself. Now available, the Phambili MetaPro represents Wayne’s biggest gumboot innovation in more than 20 years, combining integrated protection with improved flexibility, reduced weight and a more streamlined wearing experience for demanding working environments.
At the centre of the Phambili MetaPro is Wayne’s newly developed MetaGuard. Rather than relying on a traditional external metatarsal guard, the MetaGuard is integrated directly into the boot’s construction. This form-fitting approach delivers standards-compliant metatarsal protection in a sleeker, more flexible form and changes the way protection is incorporated into the gumboot.
INTEGRATED PROTECTION THAT MOVES DIFFERENTLY
Traditional external metatarsal protection can add unnecessary bulk and restrict the way a boot moves. The Phambili MetaPro takes a different approach by placing the MetaGuard within the boot itself.
The benefit becomes particularly relevant during the movements that make up a demanding shift. Walking, climbing, bending and kneeling all require footwear to flex with the wearer. By integrating the MetaGuard into the construction, Wayne has created a system that moves more naturally through these activities while maintaining the protection required for demanding environments.
The Phambili MetaPro delivers 4.5x improved flexibility, supporting greater freedom of movement throughout the shift. It is also 14% lighter than current offerings, reducing weight for improved wearer comfort. Together, these improvements create a less bulky, more streamlined wearing experience without moving away from the protective purpose of the boot.
This is the central technical innovation behind the MetaPro: the metatarsal protection is not simply added to the outside of the gumboot. It forms part of the boot’s construction, creating an integrated system designed around protection, movement and comfort.
PROTECTION IN EVERY DETAIL
The integrated MetaGuard is only one part of the Phambili MetaPro’s protective construction. The boot also incorporates ankle impact protection, adding protection around the ankle area, as well as a steel toe cap for impact protection across the toe.
Heel protection adds another layer of coverage, while kick-off spurs make the gumboot easier to remove. The upper is manufactured from virgin PVC to provide a flexible upper construction, and the PVC/nitrile sole delivers durable construction suited to demanding working environments.
These features work together in a gumboot that has been developed to support the practical realities of active industrial work. The Phambili MetaPro is designed to move through the shift with less bulk while retaining the key protective features required of safety footwear.
TWO LEVELS OF PROTECTION
The Phambili MetaPro is available in two configurations, identified by colour-coded soles that provide a clear visual reference between the protection options.
The green-sole Phambili MetaPro features the integrated MetaGuard, steel toe cap, virgin PVC upper and PVC/nitrile sole. It combines integrated metatarsal protection with steel toe cap protection in the MetaPro’s streamlined construction.
The red-sole Phambili MetaPro adds a steel anti-penetration midsole to the integrated MetaGuard and steel toe cap. This gives the red-sole version an additional level of underfoot protection alongside its metatarsal and toe protection.
The two configurations allow the Phambili MetaPro platform to address different protection requirements while retaining the same core design approach. For safety teams and procurement decision-makers, the colour-coded sole system also makes the two versions immediately distinguishable when identifying the appropriate option for a working environment.
DESIGNED AROUND SAFETY, FLEXIBILITY AND COMFORT
The Phambili MetaPro is designed to meet SANS 20345 / EN ISO 20345, bringing its integrated construction together with recognised safety requirements.
Its development also focuses on wearer experience. In demanding environments, protection remains essential, but the way a boot feels and moves throughout a shift matters too. Reducing bulk and weight, while increasing flexibility, helps create footwear that can accommodate repeated movement more naturally.
The 4.5x improvement in flexibility supports greater freedom of movement, while the 14% reduction in weight contributes to improved wearer comfort. The integrated MetaGuard further supports this approach by providing form-fitting metatarsal protection without the bulk of a traditional external guard.
The Phambili MetaPro is also manufactured using non-hazardous, DOTP-compliant PVC technology. Combined with its virgin PVC upper and PVC/nitrile sole, this forms part of a gumboot construction developed for demanding industrial environments.
A NEW CHAPTER FOR WAYNE GUMBOOTS
For Wayne, the launch of the Phambili MetaPro marks its biggest gumboot innovation in more than 20 years. The product introduces a new way of incorporating metatarsal protection into a locally manufactured gumboot and brings together the technical and practical benefits of integrated protection, improved flexibility, reduced weight and a more streamlined wearing experience.
For industries where workers spend shifts walking, climbing, bending and kneeling, the difference lies in how the boot is constructed. The MetaGuard sits within the Phambili MetaPro rather than outside it, allowing the boot to deliver the required protection in a sleeker system that moves more naturally with the wearer. The Wayne Phambili MetaPro is now available in green-sole and red-sole configurations.
