In the traditionally male dominated field of mining, one woman is shattering glass ceilings and paving the way for diversity and innovation. Mangie Magadalega is a trailblazer in the mining industry, who is leading the charge with a steadfast dedication to forging meaningful connections and pioneering groundbreaking solutions. Hailing from a small town in Venda, Thohoyandou, she epitomises the spirit of leadership and collaboration that is needed in a tough industry.

Mangie’s success in the mining industry is testament to her tenacity and passion for excellence. With a background in sales and mechanical engineering, she embarked on her career with the  determination to make a difference. Soon after graduating from the University of Johannesburg, her talent and drive caught the attention of talent recruiters.

For Mangie, working at Michelin isn’t just a job, it’s a transformative experience that empowers individuals to unleash their full potential and make a meaningful impact on the world. From day one, she felt the pulse of the work culture, which is rooted in the values of respect, performance, and responsibility. “I feel fortunate to be in an environment where innovation thrives, every idea is valued and collaboration fuels progress”, she remarks.

Not long after joining Michelin, the company recognised her drive and entrusted her with increasingly challenging projects, resulting in her appointment her as key account manager in their mining division.

One of her biggest achievements was in late 2022, when one of the Michelin mining tyres exceeded expectations while operating on a mine in Limpopo, by clocking in more hours than any other tyre in its class. Her abilities were recognised and enabled her the role of a Business Development Manager role when she was encouraged for rebuilding relationships with new clients and igniting conversations with end-users to regain Michelin’s share of accounts.

“Something else that sets this company apart for me is it’s unwavering commitment to employee development and well-being. From comprehensive training programmes to opportunities for advancement, Michelin invests in its people, recognising that their success is the company’s success”, Mangie adds.

To young South African women looking to venture into the mining industry, Mangie had this to say, “Go forth with courage, conviction, and an unyielding belief in your ability to make a difference. The world awaits your brilliance, leadership, and boundless potential. Seize every opportunity, embrace challenges, and let your work speak for itself”
