As South Africans prepare for their annual December break, the focus for many shifts to travel plans, family gatherings and well-deserved rest. However, the Festive Season also presents a period of heightened fire risk, especially when homes are left unoccupied for extended periods. According to ASP Fire, taking proactive steps before leaving for holiday can significantly reduce the likelihood of fire incidents, property damage and insurance disputes.
Michael van Niekerk, CEO of ASP Fire, stresses that household fire risks are often underestimated during this time of year. He notes that simple oversights, such as overloaded plugs, faulty appliances and unmaintained electrical systems, tend to be the underlying causes of domestic fires.
“The Festive Season should be a time of relaxation, not avoidable emergencies. By planning ahead and applying basic fire safety precautions, homeowners can leave with peace of mind. ASP Fire has seen first-hand how preventable most residential fires are, and we encourage people to take these risks seriously,” says van Niekerk.
Before departing, homeowners should ensure that all non-essential appliances are unplugged. Heaters, fans, television sets, computers, routers and small kitchen appliances can all pose ignition risks if they develop electrical faults while unattended. A licensed electrician should be consulted if there are any signs of tripping circuits, flickering lights or persistent burning smells. Loadshedding also contributes to electrical surges, meaning surge protection is a valuable investment.
Gas cylinders used for braais or patio heaters must be fully closed and stored outdoors in a shaded and well-ventilated area. Candles should never be left where they might be accidentally lit, and festive lighting should be inspected for frayed cables or damaged plugs. Outside the home, dry vegetation, especially in high fire risk regions, must be cleared away from structures to prevent the spread of wildfires.
Security systems also play a role in fire protection. Many modern alarm systems can integrate smoke detection, offering early warning alerts to homeowners or security companies even if no one is present. Van Niekerk explains that early detection remains one of the strongest defences against severe fire damage and that well maintained detectors can make the difference between a contained incident and the loss of an entire property.
Community awareness is equally important. Neighbours should be informed of travel dates so that they can report any unusual activity or smoke. ASP Fire advises that homeowners ensure domestic workers or house sitters know how to operate alarm systems, where fire extinguishers are located and who to call in an emergency.
Preparation is key. “South Africans face many risks, from electrical instability to extreme heat. Fire is fast, destructive and unforgiving. The best protection is to take action before leaving for holiday,” says van Niekerk. ASP Fire has decades of experience assisting clients with fire risk assessments and practical fire safety solutions that make homes safer all year round.
The Festive Season is an opportunity to rest, reconnect and recharge. With responsible planning and a clear focus on prevention, homeowners can enjoy their holidays knowing they have minimised their risks and safeguarded their most important assets.
